Crying in Infants

General Newborn Care

Before your baby was born you probably had a mental picture of what he would look like. Most likely that mental picture looked more like the smiling infant on a box of baby cereal. It is a bit of a surprise when your baby doesn't look like that picture and actually cries a lot.

All infants cry in the first few weeks of life. The cry in the delivery room is how the newborn fills his lungs with air and expels fluid that was in them. Infants cry because they are tired, hungry, bored, wet or uncomfortable. Many times they cry for no apparent reason at all. You must not think that you are doing something wrong if your baby is crying. When parents quickly respond to a newborn's cry in the first months of life, babies feel nurtured. This type of communication between parent and child is important in developing bonds and relationships.
