Care of Newborn's Vagina
General Newborn Care
The mother's hormones may produce a couple of conditions in a newborn's vagina and vulva, which sometimes alarm parents. However, these conditions are normal. First, the labia may appear very swollen and red. This goes away within the first month. Second, vaginal discharges may occur. They are usually clear-white but may be bloody. These discharges are due to the decreasing levels of maternal hormones in the baby's blood.
Cleaning the vagina
The vagina may be cleaned gently with clear water. Gently separate the outer lips and wipe them with a soft cloth or the tip of a wash cloth. Do not use a Q-Tip. It is not necessary to clean beyond the inner lips. When you bathe your baby this area will clean itself. Stool should of course be removed from the vaginal area. Do not attempt to rub away diaper creams or vernix.
